about

One of my favorite solo piano albums is Paul Bley’s Open, to Love. This album is called Savjest, to Follow. Bosnian word savjest, as well as Russian совесть, is often impossible to fully translate into other languages. But, in any case, savjest - conscience – is what does not allow you to be silent when injustice is happening around.

In summer 2021, as a member of A Beloved Enemy project, I visited Zenica, a small Bosnian city (the track Zenica, like Zen is dedicated to its outwardly calm atmosphere). Here I heard stories about the Bosnian war – the bloodiest in the history of modern Europe – and worked closely with those who survived this terrible tragedy, the pain from which has not subsided on this land for almost thirty years. Right Back from Bosnija is a story about this war, told with no words but through sounds. The continuation of this story is Was haben wir…, an impression from the soulful and deep performance Was haben wir gelacht created by Ina Arnautalić and Maja Zećo, two Bosnian refugees now living in Berlin. The album’s last track is the bell of conscience that sounds inside me, permanently reminding of that tragedy which is impossible to remain silent about.
